Keeping Your Discord Notifications Under Control

You get enough notifications between your phone and your computer. Do you really care about every single message from Discord? Probably not. Luckily, Discord has some very customizable notification settings. Let’s dive into how to control your Discord notifications!

Individual Server Notifications

You could get a lot of servers accrued in your Discord app, and some you may care about more than others. If only you could control your notifications differently with each one. Well, you can! Just right-click on the server icon for whatever server you want to edit, then click Notification Settings.

Muting Servers Entirely

You can start by muting a server completely, which will silence all unread indicators and further notifications except for direct mentions. This is if you really don’t want to receive anything except the most pertinent alerts. You don’t even need to open the notifications settings. One of the options when right-clicking on a server icon is to just mute the entire server.

Server Notification Settings

You can change what triggers Discord notifications, based on how much you want to see. The default is to receive all notifications, of every message. On desktop, you will receive pop-up notifications of new messages. The next option is to only receive notifications for messages that you are directly @mentioned in. And then there is the third option, which is to receive no notifications at all.

Suppress Discord Notifications

One of the most annoying aspects of Discord notifications is getting notified every time someone mentions everyone. The suppression options turns off @everyone and @here, which might save you some annoying alerts just because someone wanted to say hello to the whole server.

Notification Overrides

Sometimes you really only care about one or two channels in a server, but not the rest. In that case, Discord lets you change specific settings for certain channels. This can be highly useful for staying up to date on the specific channels that pertain to you, while ignoring all of the other useless messages. You can also mute or unmute individual channels when you open the channel and look for the bell in the header bar of the channel.

Mobile Notification Settings

The notification settings for each server also let you toggle on and off mobile notifications. From the mobile app, you can change pretty much all of the same settings that you can on desktop. The specific settings available will depend on if you’re using an iOS or Android device. For example, on iOS you will be able to choose if Discord notifications show up in the Notification Center and if they make sounds. These settings will be part of your device, but all of the other standard Discord settings will be in-app.

Life is busy, so use these simple Discord notification tips to keep your life a little more under control. Discord know you don’t want to see every single message, and offers robust notification settings for you to tweak to your needs. Use this incredible level of customization to your advantage!
